'H' Glossary Terms
Handoff
The successful transfer of a mobile telephone call from one base
station to another.
Handset
Pertaining to either a mobile handset or landline portable handset,
this is the hand-held device to make and receive phone calls.
Handset with plan
This is the option from most telecommunications service providers
that offers a new handset with a 24 or 12 month contractual
agreement. Most plans will include a handset that is able to be paid
off through the designated monthly payment option. If a user wants a
more expensive handset option, a Mobile Repayment Option will be
added to the monthly bill.
Handset Included
This is the further extrapolated explanation of a handset that costs
an amount that correlates to the cost of the plan per month.
Included handsets means that the user does not have to pay any extra
for the phone over the duration or at the end of the contract
period. At the end of the contract period the user owns the handset.
Handsfree Kit
An accessory or feature application that allows a user to continue
talking on a mobile handset without having to hold it.
Handsfree Car Kit
An accessory option kit that is used for handsfree communication in
vehicle, and can include an in car cradle, cigarette lighter battery
charger and external antennas, microphone and speaker.
Handshake
A term when used in a telecommunications context that describes
signals that precede the interoperation between two network nodes
like a mobile phone to a base station. Telecommunications handshakes
often involve a form of security authorisation.
HDSL - High Capacity Digital Subscriber Line
HDSL a viable and profitable transport medium for high-capacity
services used especially in VoIP and multimedia network
architecture.
Hertz (Hz)
The unit of frequency used to measure electromagnetic waves such as
radio or mobile phone. One hertz has a periodic interval of one
second.

HFC - Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (Cable)
This term refers to the cable that is used for the Cable TV and
Cable Internet network in Australia. A Hybrid Fibre Coaxial network
uses a combination of optical fibre cables to connect exchanges and
hubs, and then coaxial cables run from the hubs to customer
premises.
HiBIS
This was the Higher Bandwidth Incentive Scheme launched by the
Australian Government in April 2004 and was subsequently replaced by
the Broadband Connect Scheme on January 1 2006. The aim of both
programs is to provide higher speed broadband to those in rural
areas and at prices comparable to those in metropolitan areas.

High-gain Antenna
A high-gain antenna is used to achieve a higher range of mobile
reception. Any gain is measured in decibel variations.

HTML - Hypertext Markup Language
This is the language use to code and author webpages on the
Internet. The browser applications interpret the code and recreate
the page as the author intended.
HTTP - Hypertext Transfer Protocol
HTTP - the text that usually precedes www. in a URL refers to the
protocol for the transfer of webpage information between users and
servers on the Internet.
