Radio Frequency

RATE - Remote Australia Telecommunications Enhancement Program
Discontinued in 2004 this was a project aimed to upgrade remote
radio communications systems that were used in place of the standard
telephone system.
Rebill Service
This is the service provided by a reseller - a service provider who
doesn't own the actual network but leases them from a carrier.
Regional Call

Regional Connect
This is a one-way satellite technology that uses an ISDN2 landline
upload link, which is being superseded by two-way satellite
broadband.

Residential Customer
A customer who operates from a residential address and is not a
business user.
Residential Phone Lines
A phone line installed in residential premises - usually more than
one phone line in installed.
RF - Radio Frequency (Telecommunications)
Using the electromagnetic spectrum, radio frequency is that wireless
communication technology that uses the radio band.
RFI - Radio Frequency Interference
This is the interruption or interference of a radio communications
transmission due to ambient electromagnetic radiation or other
devices using that frequency.
Also called RF Noise.
RIM - Remote Integrated Multiplexer
This is a device used to allow for multiple lines to be multiplexed
(Pair Gain), often when there is an increased demand for services
and no provision for extra wiring.
Ringing Tone
This is the tone heard when an outgoing call has reached its
destination and the end recipient's ring tone is playing. This is
the same as the Ringtone.
Ringtone
This is the tone on a mobile handset that is played to announce an
incoming call. Tones can be either polyphonic, or monophonic, and
can also be mp3 songs.
Roaming
Roaming occurs domestically and internationally, and is the function
whereby a mobile phone uses an alternative network to make and
receive phone calls. Roaming occurs when a network is unavailable or
out of range. Calls made whilst roaming are charged at a much higher
rate than standard calls.
Roaming Agreement
This is the agreement between two carrier networks that allow for
customers of each network to use the services of the other. This
agreement details the call rates, and service capabilities.
Router
A directional hardware or software device for data packet transfers
across networks. The router determines the best routing path for the
data and is occasionally aided by the network information pre-stored
on the router.
